June 6th Is... HUNGER AWARENESS DAY

Hold a “can collection” for your local food bank today. Ask residents to drop canned, boxed and paper goods in a common area and then donate those items to your local food bank. Encourage residents to donate items that they would like to receive. For several years I helped out at a food pantry and we would often receive bulging cans, expired items and samples. While we always appreciated the time and thoughtfulness of the donation, we were unable to give families expired, unmarked, and already used items. When your residents give items that they themselves would like to receive it ensures that pantry workers can focus their time on allocating the items to families that need them instead of allocating additional time disposing on non-usable items. The more time food pantry volunteers or workers have to help families the better. :0)

Common items often needed at our food pantry included:
TOILET PAPER
PAPER TOWELS (oftentimes our clients had no way to launder cloth towels)
DISH DETERGENT
DEODORANT
TOOTHPASTE
TOOTHBRUSHES
SPAGHETTI SAUCE
NOODLES
RICE
MAC AND CHEESE
POWDERED MILK
FLOUR AND SUGAR
CANNED FRUIT
CANNED VEGGIES
CANNED SOUPS AND CANNED CHILI
CANNED MEAT.
